The EyeHome, it lives…

Back in October last year my EyeHome stopped working. I assumed has had happened before that the transformer had broken again.

What I did back then was ask Elgato and they replaced the transformer for me, however according to their website they can no longer provide replacements.

I was hoping to find a replacement for my EyeHome, but after having a good look around, trying even to use the PS3, in the end I decided that the only possible replacement was a Mac mini and even that was a compromise and not a real replacement.

I did try and find a replacement transformer, but though I thought I had found a potential supplier, it wasn’t clear which transformer I should buy for the EyeHome.

So for most of this year, the EyeHome was sat in the office and I waited paitently for Elgato to make a replacement…

Yesterday I started tidying  up the office and I “found” the EyeHome and started to pack it into a box when I looked at the power supply input, noticed it said 5V and started to wonder…

The PSP power supply looked like it could fit…

It does fit…

It does power the EyeHome…

It lives!!!

  1. Glad to hear that you got your Eyehome working again. I, too, have remained true to Eyehome…it was definitely ahead of its time. My Eyehome plug died once; I then bought a used Eyehome and started using that plug. That plug later died and I tried several different plugs but none of them had the specific (and tiny!) plug connector. Finally, I bought a plug with multiple connectors and — best of all — an extended warranty since, evidently, Eyehome is hard on plugs!

What didn’t you like about the PS3 setup? That looks very tempting to me. AppleTV doesn’t support as made video formats as Eyehome so you have to add the aTV Flash hack . The Mac Mini is definitely an option but it is odd-one-out since it is basically just a computer connected to your TV (in contrast with being a conduit that supports streaming from another computer).

This market has such demand I am surprised there aren’t more and better solutions out there. I wonder if we will see computers become the new TVs before we see TVs connect better with computers?
