More rumours on new iMacs

Macrumors has some nice new rumours on the next incarnation of the Apple iMac.

The new iMac may include…

…an SD card reader, as found in the 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro, and the use of quad-core processors, which conflicts with a subsequent report claiming that the new iMac will continue to use dual-core processors.

and

…a new 100% touch-enabled mouse capable of advanced mouse functions, as well as a new aluminum Apple Remote.

I am also hoping that the Blu-Ray rumour that has also been seen is also true. However Apple do seem to have decided that video downloads from the iTunes Store and not via physical format.

I am expecting to see the new iMacs in October and I will probably more than likely be buying one, to replace my current imac which is coming up to three years old.

While we’re on the subject of new Macs, there is also a white MacBook rumour on Macrumors. I wonder if this will be the same format as the current MacBook but with better specifications. However could it be a completely new format to compete in the cheap netbook market?

New iMac, well I think I am going to wait now…

I was going to order a new iMac this summer. A 24″ model with 4GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD and a good graphics card. It would be an improvement over my current 20″ iMac which I bought in 2006.

However….

Though I knew that new models were coming out in October, I decided I needed it now and wasn’t going to wait.

However….

I then read MacRumors.

AppleInsider reports that the next-generation iMac will see the inclusion of two “compelling” new features, although sources refuse to provide anything more than suggestions as to what those features might be.

One of those features is said to have long been on the wish-lists of many Mac users while the other is expected to cater to the semi-professional audio/video crowd. This is according to cryptic tips from people often familiar with the Mac maker’s future product initiatives, but who declined to elaborate because they were not authorized to discuss the matter in detail.

My guess (based on what I have read) is Blu-Ray and an SD card slot. Though reading both articles indicate it could be anything or nothing.

However…

I really would like an iMac with Blu-Ray capability, I do watch a fair few movies on my Mac and I would like to watch them in HD.

Of course I could be completely wrong, who knows with Apple.

New Mac mini (possibly)

Nearly a year ago I mentioned rumours about a possible new Mac mini.

Then I said.

So it is looking like that we may well see a new faster, better Mac mini.

I do like the Mac mini, it works well as a little Mac for testing and trying things out as well as introducing people to the Mac. I also have used it in the past as a server for various web services and for limited use it works really well – probably would not be too happy if it was a production server.

I did try it as a TV computer, in other words connected to my TV, but I never really used it, in the main as it was an old G4 PPC model and was rather slow for recording and capturing video from an EyeTV USB device. The newer Intel models have the advantage of remote control and faster processors and graphics better suited to video.

I am interested to see where Apple goes with a new model and I may just have to get one.

This week we have seen pictures and video surface on the rumour sites, however similar things were said a year ago.

Yes I would like to get a new one to be a media server under my TV, but will we see a new one. We are going to just have to wait and see.

iMac revision, will we see Blu-Ray?

This week should see Apple release new versions of the iMac if the rumour sites are to be believed.

I wonder as well as new chips, etc… we will see the first Macs to have Blu-Ray drives?

It was back in 2005 that Apple joined the Blu-Ray consortium. MacWorld at that time said:

Apple did more than just affiliate with a trade group looking to develop and promote a new technology when it announced plans last week to join the Blu-Ray Disc Association’s board of directors. The company also inserted itself right into the middle of a battle over high-definition DVD.

Since joining the association we have not seen a single Mac with a integrated Blu-Ray drive. Third party developers (such as Roxio) have been providing Blu-Ray support for external Blu-Ray drives, however no such Apple drive has been seen.

Of course back in 2005 was the start of the HD format war, which saw HD-DVD lose this war back in February. Blu-Ray had won the format war.

So could now be the time we see Blu-Ray for the first time on the Mac platform?

Of course though Blu-Ray won the war, both Microsoft and Apple seem to be ignoring the physical HD formats and concentrating on the HD download market, with xBox Live and Apple TV.

Oh will there be a 3G iphone?

Macrumors reports:

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney claims to have heard “from sources in Asia” that Apple has placed a 10 million unit order for 3G iPhones, according to an interview by the iPod Observer. This order for 10 million 3G iPhones would reportedly be above and beyond the original 10 million Apple had planned to sell of the initial version of the iPhone in 2008.

Mac mini is dead, well possibly not, okay no it isn’t…

Rumours of the death of the Mac mini have been greatly exaggerated as various rumour sites backpedal on their missives of doom on the Mac mini.

Applesinsider say:

Last Memorial Day, AppleInsider cited sources in reporting that it appeared to be the end of the line for the itsy-bitsy Mac, which had seen limited adoption and an uncertain role during the first 24 months on the market.

They then say

For the first time in nearly a year, however, people familiar with the matter tell AppleInsider there’s new life in the Mac mini department, where a small team of engineers have recently been tasked with gutting the diminutive desktop and applying fresh internals.

So it is looking like that we may well see a new faster, better Mac mini.

I am interested to see where Apple goes with a new model and I may just have to get one.

New 802.11n Airport Express “on Tuesday”

If the rumour sites are to be believed there will be a new 802.11n capable Airport Express from Apple released on Tuesday.

We had heard reliable reports that Apple will be launching a new version of their Airport Express next week, likely on Tuesday. Apple Retail stores should have stock of the new Airport Express by mid week. The new model will be priced at the same price as the current model ($99). Though details have not been confirmed, it appears the upgrade will most likely include support for 802.11n wireless networking.

One of the downsides of the 802.11n Airport Extreme was that if you wanted to stream iTunes through AirTunes you had to downgrade your network to 802.11g compatability as the current Airport Express is 802.11g only.

A new 802.11n Airport Extreme would allow you to have a pure 802.11n wireless network and stream AirTunes as well.

I suspect it won’t support video, well that’s what the Apple TV is for.

According to the rumour images the form factor hasn’t changed, so it still looks like a MacBook power brick.

Mac Sub-Notebook

Appleinsider are rumouring that Apple will be releasing a sub-notebook at MacWorld in January.

The 13-inch portable, which AppleInsider first detailed back in February, will mark the Cupertino-based Mac maker’s re-entry into the sub-notebook market — arriving in a form-factor that’s approximately 50 percent lighter and strikingly slimmer than the company’s current 15-inch professional MacBook Pro offering.

I am quite disappointed if this is going to be the form factor.

I would really like a 10″ model, I have always liked the Sony VAIO 10″ models and would really like to see something similar running OS X.

Oh a touchscreen would be nice as well.
