Cat Physics – Game Choice #08

If you like using your iPhone for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPhone over the last few years.

What are cats up to at dawn, when nobody’s around?

Sneaking around the back alleys?

Probably!

Going through garbage cans?

Not likely!

Playing Donut Games? Most certainly!

Join the cats in their favorite midnight ball game: CAT PHYSICS!

The objective is simple — Pass the ball from one cat to another!

Sounds too simple?

Oh, wait… did we mention flip boards, glass windows, trap doors and other obstacles?

Cat Physics – £0.69

This is a nice fun game that combines physics (in a way), puzzles, logic and cats!

As with lots of these games on the iPhone where it works well is as a casual game that can be played for a few minutes at a time. Some of the puzzles are relatively simple to complete, others take a fair few attempts to get right. Even if you manage to complete a level, you can go back and try and fine tune your attempt to get a better result.

I have enjoyed this game, as have my children, lots of fun for all ages. My original review of Cat Physics on e-Learning Stuff.

Cover Orange – Game Choice #07

If you like using your iPhone for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPhone over the last few years.

Cover Orange

Cover Orange is an exciting puzzle game suitable for all ages. It combines realistic game physics, enduring levels, vibrant colours and laugh out loud animations.

It’s time to pump up the juice in a game made from pure orange concentrate!

Cover Orange

Cover Orange is one of those puzzle games that fits well into the category of casual gaming, something you pick up, play for five or ten minutes and then put down again.

The premise of the game is rather silly, you need to protect the oranges from the rain, or to quote the game:

A deadly genetically modified rain cloud of fruit dissolving vapour is heading for the orange capital of the world!

You do this by using a combination of logic, physics and various objects from wheels to barrels.

Once you have used everything, the rain appears and if it hits the oranges they shrivel and go black. Most of the levels can be completed in a few minutes, which is why it is such a good casual game, however with 340 levels, the game will take a fair amount of time to complete.

Overall a fun game that is simple to play, but can be challenging too.

Monopoly for iPad – Game Choice #06

If you like using your iPad for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPad over the last few years.

“GO” with the best MONOPOLY for iPad yet! Enjoy ALL-NEW gameplay features and improvements, including a Toyota Prius mover that lets you go for the green in more ways than one! From Mediterranean and Baltic to Boardwalk and beyond, enjoy a wealth of ways to play with friends – or friendly computer opponents!

Monopoly for iPad – £4.99

To be honest most people either hate Monopoly or tolerate Monopoly, there are also a few people who quite like it.

Playing Monopoly on the iPad makes me realise how many “house” rules there were in the games I played and how the actual rules can be quite different.

What I like about the iPad version of Monopoly is that when playing with others, it is easier and quicker to play and certainly takes a lot less time to setup and put away!

Playing against the iPad, using the AI, is less satisfying after a while, as you can predict the behaviour and use that knowledge to defeat it.

So for me Monopoly for iPad is an alternative to using the actual board game when you need a quick game or when you are in a place in which you can’t play the board game.

Scrabble for iPad – Game Choice #05

If you like using your iPad for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPad over the last few years.

Enjoy the game you know and love with stunning new HD-quality graphics, quick and easy play, plus incredible exclusive features. The world’s favourite word game is now an iPad essential!

Scrabble for iPad £4.99

I quite enjoy playing Scrabble, but it’s not the easiest game to play on the move, when travelling or when you’re on your own. I bought Scrabble for the iPhone.

When I got my iPad, I did buy Scrabble for iPad and was pleased with it.

It works well and the AI can be quite challenging when you play against the “computer”.

I have to admit I am slightly sceptical about the dictionary as it doesn’t allow some words, and has some really “weird” two letter words in it. However it is consistent and as everyone is playing by the same rules, it isn’t too much of an issue if you are playing Scrabble for iPad with a real person.

Some may think that, where as Words with Friends has Facebook integration built in that this is a limitation with Scrabble, others like me think of it as a real advantage.

From an usability perspective I found it very easy to move my letter tiles around and to try words out.

Overall I like Scrabble for iPad, and it is possible to play reasonably quick games against the AI. Quick and simple interface means that it works quickly and easily.

Update

Scrabble has been updated to a new version in the App Store.

Battleship for iPad – Game Choice #04

If you like using your iPad for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPad over the last few years.

Battleship for iPad £1.99

Experience the sea-assault game that sinks all pretenders. More powerful than ever on iPad, enjoy spectacular HD-quality graphics and stunning sound effects. Launch into the iPad exclusive 2 Player Mode and test your strategic senses in an all-out engagement for naval supremacy – just like the all-time favorite board game!

Now first things first, you can play Battleships using pen and paper and that is probably the best way to play.

My son got for Christmas a plastic version (not the official version) that was quite fun, but had one drawback the co-ordinates were the same colour as the board and as a result in poor light I actually needed a torch to read off the co-ordinates!

So in a fit of frustration I decided that there was bound to be a version for the iPad and I would buy that…

There are a few versions available for the iPad, in the end I went with the official version. No real reason, the reviews on the others were mixed and in the end I quite liked the look of the app.

As a game it works. As well as the classic version there are a few alternatives that are quite fun.

The AI when playing on your own isn’t perfect, but then again, Battleships is really more luck than skill once you’ve got a strategy sorted. Against a human however the game works well.

Annoyed with EA by the number of adverts for their other games, especially as I paid for this app; I’ve noticed that with many of the EA games they are shoving adverts into their games. It’s annoying and doesn’t work, well it doesn’t work for me.

If you have the boardgame and assuming it isn’t sitting on a shelf gathering dust then you’ll probably enjoy the iPad version.

Boggle for iPhone – Game Choice #03

If you like using your iPhone for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPhone over the last few years.

Boggle £1.49

Boggle is a nice simple game that gives you sixteen letters, has a time limit, and you need to create as many words as possible with the rules that the letters can only be used once and must be “touching”.

As with a lot of good games it is a simple concept, but quite challenging to play well.

With a recent update the basic game was reduced to just two minutes long, in the most recent update this has reverted back to three minutes following complaints from players. Three minutes is just about right when waiting for a bus or a train, or on the tube.

There is a free ads supported version, but pay the money and get the ad-free version.

Mondo Solitaire for iPad – Game Choice #02

If you like using your iPad for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPad over the last few years.

Mondo Solitaire – £3.99

On every Windows computer was a copy of Solitaire, partly to teach users how to use a mouse, and in the main for users to waste time…

There are a number of free Solitaire apps for the iPad, but what I like about Mondo Solitaire is the sheer number and variety of games within the app.

Mondo Solitaire is the ultimate Solitaire experience for your iPad. With over 100 games and over 200 different combinations of gameplay, you’re sure to find your favorites, such as Klondike and FreeCell, plus many new games to discover, from Angkor Wat to Xerces.

Mondo Solitaire’s beautiful, crisp graphics let you easily identify your cards and assess your current move. Clever tools like the magnifying glass and the paper clip help you intuitively manage your game.

A familiar library search lets you sort and select all of your games — by name, style, favorites, and even popularity. The categorized interface makes it really easy to find the exact game you want to play.

Mondo Solitaire is a true casual game you can play whenever and wherever, yet dismiss quickly to surf the web or send messages. When finished, simply tap on the game application’s icon and head right back into the action!

There is a huge choice of card games to play and the library function certainly makes it very easy to work out which games you like and which ones you’ve not played yet.

The size of the iPad screen makes it ideal for playing card games and is much easier than playing using the iPhone screen (though there is a version of Mondo for the iPhone, alas it is not an universal app so you will need to buy it for both the iPad and the iPhone).

Mondo was one of the first games I purchased for my iPad and I have been very pleased with it.

Mondo Top 5 Solitaire (which is £1.99) uses the same solitaire gaming engine in “mondo Solitaire” to bring you FreeCell, Golf, Klondike, Pyramid, and Spider. However for £3.99 with the full Mondo you get over a hundred games, so I would spend the £3.99.

Fantastic Contraption for iPhone – Game Choice #01

If you like using your iPhone for games (in the main casual gaming) then you may be interested in the following games that I have enjoyed playing on my iPhone over the last few years.

Fantastic Contraption – £1.49

If my memory serves me correctly I was introduced to this game by that Dave Foord. However the first time I played it was on my computer, as it was a Flash game. So when it came out for iPhone I did go out and buy it.

In Fantastic Contraption you build a machine from simple parts to move objects to a goal. There’s physics involved but don’t worry, just press “Start” and watch what happens! The simple controls and step-by-step tutorial will have you building fantastic contraptions in no time!

The concept is simple move stuff from one place to another using the bits, wheels and parts available.

What I like about the game is that there is a learning element, not just in the fact that there is physics involved, but that in order to pass a level you need to use trial and error and learn from your mistakes. Unlike some other games there isn’t a single solution either, so you don’t have to follow the path that the games designer usually makes for these kinds of games, you can create your own path entirely. One feature of the game is when you have completed a level you can see the solutions that others came up with.

As with a lot of games on the iPhone this one is nice in that you don’t need to spend a huge amount of time playing the game to have fun. You can spend five minutes fancompleting a level and then put the phone away (and catch that train or start watching that film).

For those that finish all the levels, there is now Fantastic Contraption 2.

Fantastic Contraption 2 is the sequel to the original Flash hit Fantastic Contraption! Developed in response to fan requests, Fantastic Contraption 2 contains the anticipated features of magnets, moving platforms, and a new integrated badge system. Users will also be able to conquer more than 60 new levels, master linking chains, and build creative contraptions of their own using the new Level Editor!
